49 million lands in San Javier

A.E.N.A. the Spanish airports and air navigation department has announced that it will be investing 49.3 million Euros in San Javier airport in Murcia. This announcement will clarify a few of the million and one rumours circulating regarding the future of the San Javier airport in Murcia following the announcement that the international airport in Corvera will be open within 5 years.

A.E.N.A. plans to build a new 9000 square metre terminal, further expand and improve the car parking facilities and create new access roads to the airport.

Many readers will no doubt take this news with a pinch of salt as two years have passed since the second runway and control tower were completed and they are still not in use.

This will also soon change. The delay in opening the new runway is due to a change in European law regarding the storage of fuel. In order to comply with the modified regulation a new project has to be drawn up. The construction work on the new fuel storage facilities is nearing completion and AENA hopes to have the new runway and tower open for October 2008.

Once the new runway and control tower are open the number of flights to and from San Javier airport will increase dramatically, as one runway will be exclusively used by civilian flights and will not have to accommodate the military as it does today.

San Javier airport is becoming increasingly popular with low cost airlines and as such the number of passengers using the airport increased by 21% in 2007 compared to 2006 with almost 2 million passengers (1,995,162)

Once the new terminal is complete and the additional runway is open this figure is expected to increase substantially.
