Beaches for everyone at Puerto de Mazarron

The innovative beach programme at Puerto de Mazarrón in Murcia continues to see new facilities developed to make sure that there is something for everyone.

The local town hall has implemented the programme over recent years to include more than 30 beaches at the resort. The town is very proud to have received the top Q mark quality award for the Playa del Castellar. This is a hard-won honour for water quality, services, facilities and maintenance have to be of the highest standard. This is the first beach at Mazarrón to receive the award but more are expected in the future.

In fact the Playa del Castellar is rather special in a very important way in that it is the first beach in Spain, said Councillor Alicia Jimenez Hernandez that is dedicated especially for children. The council realised some time ago that not all beach lovers wanted the same type of experience. Children love making a noise, charging about, playing ball games and other activities. This isn't exactly what older people appreciate when they go down for spell on the beach. The solution has been to set aside different beaches to appeal to different groups of people. At the Playa del Puerto de Mazarron for example, there are plenty of facilities for people who want a quieter time, including those for people with mobility problems. Wooden decking leads right into the sea, there are hand rails at the waters edge and shaded seats to float comfortably in the water. Full wheelchair access is available.

But if it is fun and excitement that the kids are looking for, then the Playa del Castellar is the place to head for. Plenty of play equipment is provided right on the sand and there is a full programme of free activities to keep the youngsters amused all the year round. Pedro is the man charged with keeping everyone happy and he speaks English, which will be a relief to British mums and dads who haven't yet mastered the Spanish language.

There is an information cabin which is his office and the activities include all sorts of things to amuse and exhaust even the most energetic of children. Weekend activities are underway and from June to September there is a daily programme of activities for children aged from 4 - 15.

Puerto de Mazarrón also operates a children's wrist band safety scheme operated by the Red Cross. All the kids have to do is on arrival on holiday; sign in once at one of the beach cabins. Names and contact details of parents are taken. Then if anyone gets lost in the excitement, beach staff can easily contact parents.

During the colder months, the Playa del Castellar functions as the towns winter beach with specially made wind breakers and a weekend adult activity programme is operated. This includes petanca, beach football, health talks, bingo and taichi.
