British expats migrating to Murcia and Almeria

As far as British ex-pats are concerned the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca are becoming less popular areas to settle and buy property, instead they are settling in Murcia and Almeria in increasing numbers.

Murcia has at present the fourth highest number of British expats living in the region after Alicante, Malaga and the Balearics. Murcia has 5.7% of the British resident in Spain, with 8,562 holding residency cards. The number of Brits paying social security in the area rose to 1,470 up to the 31st January. This indicates that an increasing number of Brits are electing to start businesses in the region. They are attracted by a lovely climate, relatively unspoilt beaches, golf and other attractions, and good and improving transport links. The number of new homes being built is set to reach over 83,000 by 2007 and the population will rise by up to 250,000.

Murcia has become popular because of the lack of overdevelopment and Almeria has plenty of space for more homes to be built. Of the 270,000 Brits in Spain, 90,000 own their own homes and this trend is set to continue.
