Infrastructure

  • The new Cartagena to Vera motorway is now open, reducing travel times to and from this area
  • Work has started on the new international airport at Corvera and is expected to be completed by 2010. This new airport will be 30 minutes drive from the bay of Mazarron.
  • An additional runway has recently been built at Murcia (San Javier) airport and is in the process of being commissioned. A new arrivals terminal and additional check-in desks have recently opened.
  • New terminal at Alicante airport is under construction.
  • Many new golf courses being developed locally, with 2 new golf resorts promised for Puerto de Mazarron. The regional government is introducing new laws to regulate golf courses in terms of water consumption
  • New Ikea store opened in Murcia on February 28th 2006
  • New shopping centres in Murcia and Cartagena now open
  • The new commercial centre at Cartagena has opened, with many big stores e.g C&A, H&M, Zara, Toys'R'Us and Leroy Merlin (the large French DIY store). Further big things are planned for Cartagena over the next 20 years. The new hospital at Cartagena is set to open in 2009, work has already started.
  • Puerto de Mazarron - new marina with over 250 berths now open, with additional marinas planned for Bolnuevo, Isla Plana and La Azohia
  • Desalination plant under construction at Isla Plana to alleviate summer water shortages
  • The area of El Alamillo close to Puerto de Mazarron is to become bicycle friendly with a new promenade planned which will join up with the existing promenade
  • Mazarron to get a top class swimming pool, reported to be the best in Spain
  • New underground car park in Puerto de Mazarron now open, this will help alleviate summer parking problems
  • House prices soar in Murcia, leading the way over other regions of Spain. Foreigners buy 25% of the houses for sale in this region
Education
There are a number of schools locally; which provide a good level of education from junior school right up to university level. Murcia has a very large well respected university. Teachers in Spain generally have a good level of English and English is taught as a second language.

Shopping
The local towns and cities are well serviced by many of the major stores such as El Corte Ingles, Carrefour, Eroski, Lidl, etc. There is a very good selection of local shops providing everything you should ever need.
