More flights on the way

The small San Javier airport in Murcia could be offering commercial flights around the clock in a month’s time. This will make it even easier for holiday home owners to fly back and forth from the UK at much more reasonable times as many flights are expected to leave the airport in the early afternoon.

The opening of a second runway and a new control tower is expected to coincide with the visit of the Minister for Development Magdalena Alvarez although no date has yet been fixed, as her official calendar has not been released.

The airport has been a military base since it was established 60 years ago and slowly over the years it has built up its passenger base; last year saw nearly two million passengers travel through the airport, some 21% more than in 2006. Whilst the number of passengers has been steadily growing, the looming recession has impacted on the number of people that are in a financial position to take holidays and as a result of this the number of passengers has dropped by approximately 5%. The slight drop in numbers has not affected A.E.N.A.’s plans to expand the airport with a new passenger terminal costing 32 million Euros planned to be built between 2009 and 2012 together with an additional 10 million Euros being spent on new parking facilities.
