The region of Murcia has experienced a growth of 200,000 new citizens in the last five years according to data from the Nationals Institute of Statistics measuring population increases between 2002 and 2008.
Overall in Spain, the population has increased from 40.9 million in 2002 up to a figure of 45.2 million up 2008, an increase of over 4 million people. The areas where growth has been the highest are Cataluņa and Madrid with increase of 0.9 million and 0.7 million respectively. Growth has been lowest in the regions of the Balearics, Castilla La Mancha and Murcia where each of these regions has gained 200,000 new faces.
Asturias is unique in that it is the only region to register a decline in population with a fall of just under 3000 people.
