Murcia to invest 8.7 million Euros in Roads

The Autonomous Community of Murcia is set to invest 8.7 million Euros in infrastructures by improving the quality of road links between the campo of Cartagena and the commercial areas of the Mar Menor.

The works will also mean that one of the regions accident black-spots will be improved and access to the new airport at Corvera will be easier. The planned work will benefit over 337,000 residents in these areas, with better roads and communication links between Cartagena, La Union, Torre Pacheco, San Javier, San Pedro, Fuente Alamo and Los Alcazares. This is around 25% of the total number of residents of the Murcia region.

The Director General of Highways Jose Guijarro, announced last week that the regional government was to invest 8,716,352 Euros in the schemes. In reality there will be 7 separate projects, three to conserve existing roads, one to improve road safety and the remaining three for improvements to the road network. Works are expected to begin in the next few weeks.

Work to improve road safety will focus on the MU-602 Alhama de Murcia to Cartagena road at the intersection with the E-18. This link joins Pozo Estrecho with the campo de Cartagena and will allow one of the areas worst road stretches for accidents to be improved giving the 10,000 drivers per day who use this route more peace of mind and much safer driving conditions. This project will cost around 490,000 Euros and the highways department will construct a roundabout at the crossroads at La Guia which will allow traffic to get in lane before the exits for Cartagena Vera toll road. The work on the roundabout should be completed before the end of the year.

The improvement projects include a new bridge over the rambla at Fuente Alamo and the resurfacing of the MU-601 on the stretch between Fuente Alamo and Valladolises. This will also contribute to making the access to the new airport easier for travellers. The bridge project has a budget of 656,000 Euros and will begin in November whilst work on the MU-601 will have a budget of around 4 million Euros.

Further improvements will take place on the C3319 between Puerto de la Cadena and San Javier as the 25km stretch of roads needs to be modified to cope with the high volume of traffic it carries, currently around 13,000 vehicles per day. These works will be completed in around a year by which time the volume of traffic is expected to have increased to around 30,000 vehicles per day.

Restoration work on other roads in the area will see different project in the Torre Pacheco, San Javier and Los Alcazares areas completed with 9.5km of road being improved at a total cost of just over 1.1 million Euros. Work began last month on the construction of a cycleway on the F-34 along with resurfacing work and other projects include the resurfacing of the F-26 from Los Alcazares to Balsicas.
