Tourist spend up 18%

The region of Murcia has seen healthy growth in the first 8 months of the year in the tourism section with the amount spent by foreign tourist up 18% over the same period in 2007.

Figures released show that just over 493,500 Euros were spent here up to the end of August, an 18% increase over the 2007 figures. The national average spend was up only 3% for the same period, proving that Murcia continues to attract foreign travellers. The average spend per person for the same period also rose by 5.3%.

Tourism now contributes 9.5% of the regions gross domestic product rising from 6.4% in 2002, a rise of just over 3% in the last 5 years alone.

The promised results show that the promotion of Murcia as a holiday destination at tourism shows and international fairs is succeeding and the last campaigns, included countries as diverse as China, Ireland, Portugal and Iceland.

There are now 13 information points in UK airports, 2 in Ireland and 1 in Norway to promote the area in other European cities with direct flights connecting with Murcia’s San Javier airport. In addition 3 information points have been installed in shopping and commercial centres in the Norwegian cities of Oslo, Stavanger and Trondheim.
