Construction works have begun on the new airport terminal for the region of Murcia international airport as confirmed by the Council for Public Works, Homes and Transport.
One of the first steps has been the technical meeting to co-ordinate the start of the work on the terminal building. Earth movement has begun already and concreting work has also started on the site.
The runway at the new airport will be 3km long and 45m wide and is now clearly visible to visitors to the site. The airport will cover 306 hectares, including 1,500 parking spaces, a bus terminal and taxi ranks. There will be 20,000 employees during the construction phase and 1,300 personnel needed for the subsequent operation of the facility.
The airport which will cost around 266 million Euros to construct will be capable of handling 15,000 flight operations each year through its 5 boarding gates. In the future this may expand to 9 gates depending on demand.
